The success of the Asus Eee Pad Transformer has proved that there’s a lot of room for innovation in the tablet market. The Transformer has also proved that people still want proper keyboards, irrespective of how good a touchscreen gets. We’ve been thinking about the future of tablets, and what features are likely to play a big part in next-gen products.
KeyboardsAlthough keyboards are hardly the technology of the future, the Transformer has proved that they have an enduring popularity, so maybe it’s not time to give up on them yet. It’s already possible to buy lots of different Bluetooth keyboards for tablets, but we expect to see more add-on options in a similar form to the Transformer.
Quad-core processingAs with netbooks – which started off as simple as possible and gradually got more powerful – we expect the next generation of tablets to be a lot more powerful. You’ll find dual or quad-core processing on option, making it a lot easier to carry out multiple tasks simultaneously.
3D technologyRunning similar Android operating systems to mobile phones, it seems realistic to expect similar features to appear on tablets in the future. We’ve already seen a couple of 3D smartphones, and it seems like only a matter of time before 3D becomes commonplace in the tablet market.
Better office functionalityThere are already some functional office applications available for tablets, but as they get more powerful and more capable in terms of hardware, it’s only a matter of time before we see more powerful and capable software to take full advantage. This is likely to make tablets a lot more suitable for business use.
Better appsWe’ve seen a good start from the tablet industry, with some brilliant apps on offer, but there’s still a big difference between smartphones and tablets. Android especially feels like an OS that’s slightly better on the smaller screen, and would benefit from more apps developed especially for tablets.
We’d like to know what you’d like to see in the next generation of tablets, however. Leave a comment below and let us know.
